Think about water for a moment. If you had never been to earth, and you met water wearing each of her faces, you would not believe she was a single element. Liquid water, steam, and ice are in entirely different states, with entirely different physical and chemical properties.

Your Autonomic Nervous System is like this. The liquid water, steam, and ice versions of you might as well be different people.

Thriving is the liquid water version of you (all five of the health creating states are liquid water states). But we have to understand the qualities of steam and ice, because the disease-creating states are steam and ice states, and because the pathways out of them are differentiated depending on whether you are stuck in a hot stress (steam) state, or a cold stress (ice) state.

If you get stuck in the steam version of yourself, we have to cool you to bring you back to liquid water. But if you are ice, we can cool you all day long and nothing will happen. Make sense?
